James Northcote RA (22 October 1746, in Plymouth – 13 July 1831, in London) was a British painter. He became a member of the Royal Academy in 1787, and a member of the Royal Institute of the Netherlands in 1809.
James Northcote (born Oct. 22, 1746, Plymouth, Devon, Eng.—died July 13, 1831, London) was an English portraitist and historical painter. Northcote was apprenticed to his father, a poor watchmaker of Plymouth, and, during his spare hours, learned to use paintbrush and pencil.

Self Portrait. James Northcote (1746–1831) The Box, Plymouth. (b Plymouth, Devon, 22 Oct. 1746; d London, 13 July 1831). English painter and writer. He was largely self-taught until he moved to London in 1771 and became the pupil and assistant of Reynolds, a fellow Devonian.
He exhibited at the Royal Academy every year from 1781 to 1825 (apart from 1790). He worked widely across genres, producing literary works for John Boydell’s Shakespeare Gallery, genre works and animal paintings, with portraits remaining a staple throughout his career.
