Aug 31, 2021 · We take a look at each of the main characters in Nier: Automata, and delve into their personalities to rank them.
- 2B. 2B is a female combat android, the protagonist of Route A. A very charming android, she has a cold personality and speaks very little, preferring to carry out her missions in peace.
- Nier. The main character of the game. He is an adult male (in Gestalt) or a younger boy (in Replicant). His daughter (in Gestalt) or little sister (in Replicant) Yonah was stricken with a mysterious disease called the “runic plague,” leaving Nier solely devoted to finding a cure.
- Emil. A boy who joins Nier’s group later in the game. Emil is cursed to turn everything he looks at into stone. For this reason he has been blindfolded for as long as he can remember and is taken care of by a butler (Sebastian) in a mansion.
- Grimoire Weiss. Grimoire Weiss is a floating magic book found in NieR early in the game. From then on, it serves as his inventory and logbook, among other things, and enables Nier to use magic and improve weapons.

- Foul-Mouthed Warrior Kaine. NieR is a series about overcoming personal struggles, and no character represents that better than Kains. Kaine was bullied by nearly everyone she knew for most of her childhood due to being born intersex and identifying as a trans woman.
- YoRHa Unit 9S. 9S starts out as a happy little sidekick that helps 2B by hacking enemies. Despite his happy attitude at first glance, he is a heavily flawed character, but that is the reason many fans like him.
- Emil The Skeleton. Most know Emil for his skeleton appearance, but he was originally just an ordinary boy that got experimented on. He gained immortality and the power to turn anything to stone by looking at them.
- Grimoire Weiss. Grimoire Weiss is more than just a magic book. He is a hilarious friend that has some of the best dialogue interactions in the series. There is never a dull moment with him around, and thankfully he is around very often.

Ps I wasn't sure who to include for Automata, but I think pods should be included while operators shouldn't, because of one specific line in the ending "the six of us (including the player)". 0.
