Feb 25, 2010 · Despite substantial budget cuts as a result of the Great Depression, the high school’s construction was finished in 1935, followed by the completion of its athletic field in 1938. At the time, Wilson High School was considered one of the most modern schools designed and built in the city.
History. Early years. A student in the 1940s with fashion popular at the time. What is now Jackson-Reed High School was built on a patch of land acquired in 1930, known by the neighboring Tenleytowners as "French's Woods".
A number of Indiana State Parks were built, improved, or expanded by the CCC, which was and remains one of the most popular programs of the New Deal. But it wasn’t all conservation work for the CCC. The men not only learned valuable trade skills, but also received a classroom education.
The Lincoln family came from Kentucky and was part of a community that settled in southern Indiana after statehood in 1816. The community included several farms, a general store and post office, a mill, schools and a church. Young Abraham Lincoln’s father, Thomas, built the church’s cabinets, pulpit and window casings.
Students will learn about the CCC in general, and why it was formed. For this lesson the students will be divided into groups to do research on the New Deal programs that impacted Indiana State Parks the most: the CCC and the Works Progress Administration.
