Jan 17, 2024 · Myriad project management methodologies are derived from two core philosophies: agile and waterfall. Here’s how they work and how to choose the right one.

- Waterfall project management. Waterfall project management is a traditional, even “old school” approach to managing projects. It’s highly linear and hierarchical, with meticulously planned project phases cascading downward (like, say, a waterfall?)
- Agile project management. Agile project management is somewhat the antithesis of waterfall: Agile expects that the goals and scope will change, and it doesn’t mind at all.
- Scrum project management. Scrum is a tightly developed form of Agile project management that puts all work to be completed into the backlog, then selects from that backlog what should be completed over the next sprint.
- Strategic project management. Strategic project management is a growing discipline that isn’t exactly the same thing as the others on this list. It looks at the big picture, evaluating how (or whether) projects fit into an organization’s wider strategy.
- Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) A WBS transforms big project activities into chunks of manageable tasks you and your team can easily understand and complete.
- Gantt Charts – One of the First Project Management Techniques. Gantt charts have been around for a very long time, and they’re still a great project management technique for beginners and pros alike.
- Critical Path Method (CPM) The Critical Path Method is one of project management techniques used to accurately schedule all project activities. What you’ll be actually doing is calculating the critical path – the shortest route to project completion, and arranging tasks accordingly.
- Waterfall / Linear. Waterfall is one of the oldest project management techniques. If you use this project management technique, activities and tasks will linearly flow through 5 phases
- Waterfall. The Waterfall method, first designed by Winston W. Royce in 1970 for software development, is a traditional approach to project management.
- Agile methodology. Agile approaches are iterative, meaning they work to continuously improve a product by returning to or repeating as many steps as necessary.
- Scrum. Scrum is a lightweight Agile framework designed to help self-organizing teams develop more complex projects. The framework includes a set of roles and meetings centered on the values of commitment, courage, focus, openness, and respect.
- Kanban. Kanban is an Agile method of project management that helps visualize workflow to improve efficiency. The method got its start in the Japanese manufacturing industry before gaining popularity across many fields.
- Waterfall Methodology. Waterfall project management is a traditional approach to project management where tasks are completed sequentially and linearly.
- Agile Methodology. Agile methodology is an iterative and flexible approach to project management that focuses on collaboration, adaptability, and customer satisfaction.
- Scrum Framework. Scrum is one of the most widely used agile frameworks for managing complex software development projects. It provides a structured yet flexible approach to product development.
- Kanban Methodology. Kanban is a project management methodology that visualizes workflow using boards, cards, and columns. It also limits tasks that are in progress simultaneously to prevent overloading the team and ensure a steady flow of work.
