Apr 13, 2023 · The general rule is that as the Kp index rises, the aurora extends further from the polar regions toward the equator and becomes more active, bright, and colorful. Let's see what each Kp level means for the aurora.

Nov 12, 2017 · The Kp-index is a scale used to characterize the magnitude of geomagnetic disturbances. A geomagnetic storm starts at Kp5 after which the G-scale is also used. Magnetometers measure the strength of Earth’s magnetic field to determine the K-index, which is tied to a specific station.
The Kp index is the key metric used by Aurora watchers to tell how strong a display of the Northern Lights will be, and how far from the Arctic Circle they'll be visible. This index ranges from 0 to 9, and higher numbers mean a stronger Aurora that can be seen further away from the North Pole.
Dec 28, 2020 · The Kp index measures the global strength of a geomagnetic event. It goes from 0 to 9, respectively quiet and extreme storm. There exist several Kp indices used by different organizations but the principle of calculating it remains the same.
The level of geomagnetic activity is indicated by the planetary K index or Kp. The Kp index ranges from 0 to 9. For Kp in the range 0 to 2, the aurora will be far north, quite dim in intensity, and not very active.
Predicted Kp-indices. Below you'll find the expected global geomagnetic conditions (Kp) and those for the middle and high latitudes (K-indices). These values indicate the expected geomagnetic activity for any given 3-hour period for the next three days.
In this way, the geomagnetic index, Kp, is a very good indicator of aurora. The location and the brightness of the aurora are directly correlated with Kp. When the Kp index is high (between 7 and 9), the aurora will be bright and the auroral oval will move to lower latitudes.
