Mary, Princess Royal (Victoria Alexandra Alice Mary; 25 April 1897 – 28 March 1965) was a member of the British royal family. She was the only daughter of King George V and Queen Mary, the sister of kings Edward VIII and George VI, and aunt of Elizabeth II.
The funeral of Queen Mary (born Princess Victoria Mary of Teck), widow to King George V, took place on 31 March 1953 at St George's Chapel, Windsor Castle, following her death on 24 March and subsequent lying in state at Westminster Hall.
In 1952, George VI died, the third of Mary's children to predecease her; her eldest granddaughter, Princess Elizabeth, ascended the throne as Queen Elizabeth II. The death of a third child profoundly affected her.
Princess Mary was the only daughter of George V and Queen Mary and married Henry, Viscount Lascelles, later the 6th Earl of Harewood, in 1922. She died in 1965 and was buried at Harewood House, where her archive is open to the public.
