Plans were drawn up for the cinema to be built in the middle of Waterloo roundabout, with planning permission obtained in 1994.

The BFI IMAX first opened in May 1999. It was designed by architect Brian Avery. In designing the building, he had to take into account the fact that the screen sits at the centre of a roundabout and has an underground line running four metres below it.
