At the summit of Mount Constitution sits an observation tower fashioned after the medieval watchtowers from the Caucasus Mountains of southeastern Europe. Built with sandstone from a local quarry by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s, the 45-foot-tall tower was once a fire lookout.
In many ways, the tower atop Mount Constitution is a tale of America’s democratic vision. The land was donated for a state park in 1911 by Seattle shipbuilder Robert Moran for the express enjoyment of the people.
