Both GOES-East and GOES-West are capable of having up to two mesoscale scanning regions. The satellite’s ABI will scan each of these regions once per minute, or it can scan one region every 30 seconds. This results in satellite imagery that can update faster than most weather radars!

GOES-16 is providing data to forecasters every minute to track the storm in real time. This rapid image frequency helps forecasters identify the movement of cloud features and provides greater confidence in estimating the center of the storm and its wind speeds.
It functions as a 'one click' quick access to the highest resolution version of each image as well as back up in the event Flickr is down. The GOES-R Series (a collaboration of NOAA and NASA) is the Western Hemisphere’s most advanced weather-monitoring satellite system.
May 1, 2023 · To find this satellite data, check your favorite flight-planning resource to see what they offer. But also check out some of the good satellite viewing sites. One of my favorites is College of DuPage’s viewer at weather.cod.edu/satrad. The images here are often less than 5 minutes old.
