- Spoonful Records (144 E. State St., Downtown) You can buy records here, but if you need a turntable, this spot is the place. Owner Brett Ruland walks you through everything you need to know and will even balance it for you.
- Elizabeth’s Records (3037 Indianola Ave., Clintonville) If you’re looking to start a record collection but don’t want to break your wallet, Elizabeth’s is a good starting spot.
- Lost Weekend Records (2960 N. High St., Clintonville) This is usually my first stop, period. The owner, Kyle Siegrist, is a wizard when it comes to talking about music and is the go-to source for local music knowledge.
- Used Kids Records (2500 Summit St., Old North) The mothership for crate-digging. Used Kids sports the largest collection of records in town, with rooms dedicated to 45s, $1 bins and more.
Dreamville Records is an American record label founded by American rapper J. Cole and his manager Ibrahim Hamad. The label is currently distributed through Interscope Records, a unit of Universal Music Group. The roster includes Bas, Ari Lennox, Cozz, Omen, Lute, JID, EarthGang, and Cole himself.

- Ari Lennox. Sometimes, modern R&B music ends up sounding like evidence tapes for exorcisms. Many of the biggest hits from the last few years are made up of disembodied whispers and chants, minimalism, and forced attempts to massage the eardrums instead of sending chills down the spine.
- Bas. Bas predates most of Dreamville Records roster in terms of having a relationship with J. Cole. In an interview with DJ Vlad, the 31-year-old rapper revealed that he knew Cole since the latter attended St. John’s University in the late 2000s.
- Cozz. The 25-year-old beating heart of Dreamville Records is Cozz, a Los Angeles native with a knack for crafting songs about maturation and the problems that come with it.
- EarthGang. EarthGang is an eclectic rap duo who lazily get compared to Big Boi and André 3000, but the comparison fails to recognize the interplay between the rappers’ styles.
