History. Lenoir was established in 1841 and incorporated in 1851. The city was named for Revolutionary War general and early North Carolina statesman William Lenoir, who settled north of present-day Lenoir. His restored home, Fort Defiance, is a tourist attraction. Early history
A History of Lenoir County. Dobbs County, created from Johnston County in 1758 and named in honor of Royal Governor Arthur Dobbs, was divided into Glasgow County and Lenoir County in 1791. Lenoir County was named in honor of William Lenoir, one of the North Carolina heroes at the Battle of Kings Mountain, SC.
