Valerie Helene Mendes (née Barnett, born October 1939) is an English novelist and poet. Mendes is best known for her teenage fiction novels, Girl in the Attic, Coming of Age, Lost and Found and The Drowning, and for her historical novels for adults: Larkswood, Daddy’s Girl and Beatrice and Alexander.

This photograph is not of a beautiful woman, but of an author who works meticulously around the clock at everything she does, says and writes.
She has published two picture books, Tomasina’s First Dance and Look at Me, Grandma! and four young adult novels, Girl in the Attic, Coming of Age, Lost and Found and The Drowning. Larkswood, Valerie’s first historical novel for the adult market, was published by Orion in 2014, and translated into German.
