Dec 8, 2020 · On January 1, 1954, when the province of Ontario merged the cities, towns and townships south of Steeles Avenue into the municipality of Metropolitan Toronto, the Toronto Transportation Commission (renamed the Toronto Transit Commission) became responsible for all public transit within the boundaries of the new municipality.

As Toronto grew, so too did the ridership of the Toronto Street Railway, from 44000 in 1861 to 55000 in 1891, when the TSR’s 30-year franchise expired.
