History. Terre Haute's name is derived from the French phrase terre haute (pronounced [tɛʁ ot] in French), meaning "highland". It was named by French-Canadian explorers and fur trappers to the area in the early 18th century to describe the unique location above the Wabash River (see French colonization of the Americas).
The name was coined by French explorers of the mid 18th century, who found a plateau-like area that adjoined the Wabash River. The first American settlement, in what was previously Indian land, was established in 1811, with the construction of Fort Harrison by William Henry Harrison.
