Marly-le-Roi was the location of the Château de Marly, the famous leisure residence of the Sun King Louis XIV which was destroyed after the French Revolution. The Marly-le-Roi National Estate and Park now occupies much of the grounds of the former château, including restored waterways and lawns.

The estate of Marly-le-Roi, on the edge of Marly Forest and just 7 km from Versailles, is one of Louis XIV's major achievements. This secluded retreat, which was only open to a select few who were loyal to the King, was entirely designed by Jules Hardouin-Mansart, the architect of the Palace of Versailles .

Marly lies 7 km north-west of Versailles, halfway between Versailles and the palace of Saint Germain en Laye, and was Louis XIV’s second great work. The king used it as a residence for leisure and kept access to it restricted to only a few privileged courtiers.
