Nov 27, 2021 · I’ll share activities and strategies I use to build fact fluency, why I do not use timed tests to track student progress (and why I think they’re harmful to students), and how you can use those “drill tests” more effectively if you are required to give them in your classroom.
- Multiplying by zero: The zero property. Highlight to your class that adding zero to a number has no effect on its identity: n + 0 = n. Next, explain that in multiplication, any number multiplied by zero is also zero
- Multiplying by one: The identity property. In short, the identity property states that the product of a given number and one is that number itself: n x 1 = n.
- 3. Cover the multiplication table, starting with the “easy” numbers. To review, your students should now understand that multiplication can be thought of as repeated addition.
- 4. Show how the commutative property makes things easier. Just like addition, multiplication is commutative, meaning the order of factors doesn’t change the product (the answer).
- Break it up. This is a short and easy step, but it’s important. Don’t overwhelm your child with all 100 multiplication facts at once. Instead, focus on just one times table at a time.
- Make the facts concrete with a multiplication array. For each times table, first make sure your child understands concretely what the multiplication problems mean.
- Teach your child to use easier facts as stepping stones to the harder facts. Multiplication is a bit like climbing a huge pile of rocks. When you’re trying to reach the top, it’s a lot easier to climb up a few small rocks rather than try to scale a sheer rock face.
- Practice each times table on its own until it’s mastered. Once your child has learned how to use stepping-stone facts for a times table, focus on just that specific times table for several days.
