The history of Cardinal Newman High School is a rich one, reaching back to 1834 when the Ursuline Sisters arrived in Charleston, SC from their native Ireland.
Originally Ursuline Academy, the school was originally attached to the Ursuline Convent, founded in 1858. The school was burned down by General Sherman's troops in 1865 during the burning of Columbia in the civil war, but was later rebuilt. [5]

With the Beatification of John Henry Cardinal Newman on Sept. 19th, 2010 — the TCDSB officially recognized Blessed Cardinal Newman as the new name for our school at a Board Meeting in February 2011.
