They are not the same thing, and there are (as you note) alternatives to a for-profit journal model (including alternatives to open source, which has its own publication issues — such as not-for-profit publishers).
First, if you don't have a Master's degree you should consider applying to PhD programs in the US. The PhD programs are longer because you obtain a MS along the way. Second, I hate to say it, but most of the industry issues you listed characterize academia too, but with less pay.
