Apr 19, 2023 · Bloomington, the seat of Monroe County, is an attractive progressive community situated 50 miles south of Indianapolis. It is known as the "Gateway to Scenic Southern Indiana". Bloomington was established as an Indiana city in 1818 by a group of settlers from Kentucky, Tennessee, the Carolinas, and Virginia.
Bloomington became a settlement in 1816 when President James Madison selected the township to be the site of a seminary. Monroe County was created by an act of the Indiana General Assembly in 1818, and its present county boundaries were established by 1836.
The Monroe County Courthouse is the seat of government for Monroe County and is the traditional center of Bloomington. The third courthouse to stand on the Downtown Square, the current courthouse was built in 1907 during a time of great prosperity.
