The name of the village comes from the native elk that roamed the grassland and forests when this area was settled by German farmers in the first half of the 19th century.
Elk Grove Village is easily accessible by several Interstate highways. On the north side Interstate 90 Exit 70, Arlington Heights Road, and Exit 73, Elmhurst Road (Route 83) allow quick access to the village from Chicago, Rockford, or O'Hare Airport.
