With the creation of the Municipality of Metropolitan Toronto, what originally comprised the Townships of York, Etobicoke, and Scarborough were separated from the remainder of York County. In 1971, York County was replaced by the Regional Municipality of York.
York County's West Riding was divided once in 1816 to form Gore District (later Halton, Wentworth, Waterloo and Wellington Counties) and again in 1851 to form Peel County. Counties, districts and townships in different areas of the province may have shared the same name.
At the time, York Region was known as York County and it was comprised of many communities formed through settlement occurring during the early 1800s. As settlement intensified, more roads and paths were created; the sparsely settled natural forests were slowly cleared for agriculture and many homes and businesses built and established.
Apr 15, 2016 · York and the neighbouring Town of Weston amalgamated on January 1, 1967 and were incorporated as the Borough of York. In turn, it was incorporated as a city on June 10, 1983. York ceased to be an individual municipality on January 1, 1998, and became part of the amalgamated City of Toronto.

Tryon County was the 11th County to be formed under the English law. Montgomery and Washington counties were the first to be named under the Laws of New York State. The other original counties have retained their original names.
