There, late at night, he saw a light burning in a cottage window and it was this that triggered the story. It was written when Bates was only 19 living in Rushden [1] and working as a warehouse clerk.
Set during the early years of World War II the story describes the strange relationship that develops between a young army deserter and a married woman struggling to run a farm alone in the absence of her P.O.W. husband.
