Their powers don’t come from Chaos energy in any other universe. This could be a brand new ideia for the movie universe. It's not one to one with any universe. Sonic was, like, a living manifestation of the chaos force or some shit in Archie. Well, not chaos energy, he was the living embodiment of chaos itself.

There is one 10 minute scene in the movie with the humans only and you can take a toilet break during that part if needed. Trust me you won't miss anything good in that 10 minute human scene.

Robotnik is back, but now Sonic has his friend, Miles "Tailes" Prower. Sonic 3 at least had a story, split between it and Sonic & Knuckles, involving the Master Emerald and Robotnik tricking Knuckles into thinking Sonic is after it. Sonic 2 (the movie) is essentially wrapping up the story between Sonic 2, 3 and & Knuckles.
