Robert Koch is widely known for his work with anthrax, discovering the causative agent of the fatal disease to be Bacillus anthracis. After officially becoming a district physician in Wollstein (today's Wolsztyn), Poland, in 1872, Robert began to delve into the disease called Anthrax.

Robert Koch, who had conducted a range of important studies on illnesses caused by microorganisms, discovered and described the TB bacterium in 1882. He later studied tuberculin, a substance formed by tubercle bacteria. It was hoped it could be used as a cure for TB, but proved ineffective.
In 1891, Koch was appointed director of the newly-founded Royal Prussian Institute for Infectious Diseases, today’s Robert Koch Institute. For his discovery of the tuberculosis bacterium he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1905.
