He began his career on the local stage in Oregon, in stock companies and vaudeville , before moving to California and working in the silent film industry in 1916, at the suggestion of Charlie Chaplin .

  6. A writer/actor/director on the legitimate stage and vaudeville, Melville W. Brown inaugurated his movie career as a performer in 1916. Within four years, Brown was directing comedy two-reelers and action films. He scripted two of the best silent efforts of director Clarence Brown (no relation), Smoldering Fires (1924) and The Goose Woman (1924).
