John Vivian Drummond Nettles, OBE (born 11 October 1943) is an English actor and author. He is best known for his starring roles as detectives in the crime drama television series Bergerac (1981–1991) in the title role, and Midsomer Murders (1997–2011) as Detective Chief Inspector Tom Barnaby .

John Nettles, born 1942, is a west country actor who came to Jersey in 1980 to play the lead in an island-based cop series entitled Bergerac. This proved highly successful and ran for ten years after which time he disappeared back into the decent obscurity of the classical theatre for five years.
