Douglas James Rain (May 9, 1928 – November 11, 2018) was a Canadian actor. Although primarily a stage actor, he is perhaps best known for his voicing of the HAL 9000 computer in the film 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) and its sequel 2010: The Year We Make Contact (1984).

Called "an actor's actor" for the "silken, elegant perfection" of his performances, between 1974 and 1977 Rain was Head of the English Section of the National Theatre School (see Theatre Education).
Douglas Rain was a Canadian actor who voiced the iconic computer HAL 9000 in Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) and 2010: The Year We Make Contact (1984). He also had a career in theatre, especially Shakespeare, and was co-founder of the Stratford Shakespearean Festival.
