MELiSSA (Micro-Ecological Life Support System Alternative) is the European project of circular life support systems. It was established to gain knowledge on regenerative systems, aiming to the highest degree of autonomy and consequently to produce food, water and oxygen from mission wastes.
MELiSSA Pilot Plant. The MELiSSA concept. Inspired on a terrestrial ecosystem, MELiSSA proposes regenerative life support technologies for the production of food, recovery of water and atmosphere regeneration, together with waste reclamation.
The target of the work is the creation of a closed loop life support system with close to 100% efficiency – a self-sustainable ecosystem that ideally does not require resupply. This pilot plant is the latest outcome of 20 years of R&D performed by the MELiSSA network across various European sites.
