By 1887 he was among the wealthiest men in the city and hired architects Charles Frederick Rose and Howard Colton Stone, partners in Rose & Stone, to design a massive French Renaissance-style chateau on the northeast corner of Fifth Avenue and 79th Street.

Dec 5, 2011 · Isaac Vail Brokaw died in 1913, leaving an estate of nearly $12.5 million. Mrs. Brokaw remained in the house which, The Times said, son George “will enjoy for life after the death of his mother.” Brokaw’s daughter, Elvira Brokaw McNair inherited the lot next door at 7 East 79th Street and $250,000 to be used to erect her own residence.
The Brokaw Mansion took three years to build (1887-1890) and was built for Isaac Vail Brokaw (1835-1913), by Rose & Stone. Brokaw was a multimillionaire and founder of Brokaw Brothers, a clothier firm. Of French Chateau style architecture, it was on the New York City Preservation listing.
