The Jewish Theological Seminary of America, which would become the flagship institution of the Conservative movement, was founded in 1886 — one year after Reform adopted its Pittsburgh Platform of 1885, which explicitly rejected Jewish practices it viewed as inconsistent with modern ideas.
It already had the library of David Cassel, numbering about 3,000 volumes. The course of study extends over a period of four years, and includes training in Bible, Talmud, Jewish history and literature, theology and homiletics, and Semitics.
