The Abington Shoe Company was renamed The Timberland Company and incorporated in 1978. Jeffrey Swartz, grandson of founder Nathan Swartz, joined the company in 1986. The following year the family took the company public. Herman Swartz led the company until he retired in 1986. He was succeeded as CEO by his brother Sidney, who retired in 1998.
The Original Timberland ® Boot. The yellow boot that started it all. In 1973, an icon was born when the Abington Shoe Company launched the Original Timberland ® 8-inch Boot. The 6-inch version was released three years later, becoming the icon we know today.

With a keen eye for problem-solving, they revolutionized the footwear industry by using injection molding technology and silicone-infused nubuck leathers to create truly waterproof leather work boots.
