In one particularly schmaltzy scene where Gilbert is kissing his leading lady and saying "I love you" over and over again in his perfectly-turned-out voice, the crowd started outright laughing at him.
John Gilbert was a popular silent film star who co-starred with Greta Garbo in several classics. He died of a heart attack in 1936 after his career declined with the advent of sound and his personal troubles.
