- Open-Mindedness. Being narrow-minded is not conducive to creativity, but being open-minded is. Creative people need to maintain an open mind, so they can absorb different perspectives, opinions, and ideas, and use them to inspire their own work.
- Empathetic. Part of being open-minded and mindful as a creative person also involves being sensitive to emotions, thoughts, and experiences. Creative people are often highly empathetic, and capable of understanding the emotions of others, thanks to a strong sense of emotional intelligence.
- Highly Intelligent. Research shows creative people tend to have a high IQ, which is the most common measurement we have of intelligence. While intelligent people aren’t guaranteed to be more creative (personality traits and genetics also play a part), they are more capable of understanding the connections between different concepts which others may overlook.
- Exceptional Focus and Night Owl Tendencies. While creative people are often seen as having a playful and eccentric attitude, they can also have a high level of focus, discipline, and determination.
- Imaginative play. Observing children in imaginative play reveals a wellspring of natural-born creativity. When engaged in pretend play, children take on multiple perspectives and playfully manipulate emotions and ideas.
- Passion. Passion often stems from an experience or a relationship that moved us somehow and can lead to inspiration. It is often the emotional fuel that starts one down a creative path, but it’s only a start.
- Daydreaming. Creative people know, despite what their parents and teachers might have told them, that daydreaming is anything but a waste of time. A review of the latest science of daydreaming has shown that mind wandering offers very personal rewards, including creative incubation, self-awareness, future planning, reflection on the meaning of one’s experiences, and even compassion.
- Solitude. The metaphorical “room of one’s own” is a basic need for many creative people. Now, science has reinforced what the work habits of countless artists have demonstrated: Time for solitary reflection truly feeds the creative mind.
