Carl Gustaf Verner von Heidenstam was born on 6 July 1859 at his maternal grandmother’s summer estate, Olshammar, by Lake Vättern. He was the only child of Nils Gustaf von Heidenstam and his wife, Magdalena Charlotta Rütterskiöld, both belonging to families of old Swedish nobility.
