Chautauqua County, in the southwestern corner of New York State, along the New York-Pennsylvania border, is the westernmost of New York's counties. Chautauqua Lake is located in the center of the county, and Lake Erie is its northern border.
Chautauqua (/ ʃ ə ˈ t ɔː k w ə / shə-TAW-kwə) is a town and lake resort community in Chautauqua County, New York. The population was 4,009 at the 2020 census. The town is named after Chautauqua Lake. It is the home of the Chautauqua Institution and the birthplace of the Chautauqua movement.
Anchored by the cities of Jamestown and Dunkirk, Chautauqua County is comprised of a mixture of Victorian, lakeside, Amish, and farming communities. Play on the sandy beaches of Sunset Bay, the powder-packed slopes near Findley Lake, enjoy the bustling summer sounds of Bemus Point, and the cultural highlights of Jamestown and Chautauqua.
