Gordonstoun school is a co-educational independent school for boarding and day pupils in Moray, Scotland. Named after the 150-acre estate originally owned by Sir Robert Gordon in the 17th century, the school now uses this estate as its campus.
Round Square is an international network of schools, based on the educational concepts of Kurt Hahn, and named after a distinctive building at Gordonstoun. Founded by a group of seven schools in the late 1960s, by 1996 it had grown to 20 member schools worldwide, and has since expanded to over 200 schools. [1]
In the 1600s Gordonstoun was owned by the eccentric Third Baronet, Sir Robert Gordon, who was also known as The Wizard because of his fascination with alchemy. It was his idea to build Round Square, a distinctive building constructed in a perfect circle.
It is part of the Round Square Conference of Schools, a group of more than 80 schools across the globe based on the teaching of Hahn, and named after the Round Square building at Gordonstoun, where the first conference took place in 1967. Around 30% of students attending Gordonstoun come from abroad.
The famous Round Square, home to a boys’ house, the Gordonstoun library and archives, also gives its name to the global organisation of schools which was founded by Dr Kurt Hahn from this building. The association shares our belief in preparing pupils for more than just exams and university by giving them the skills they need for life itself.
Round Square owes much to the heritage of Kurt Hahn, who founded two of our original member schools, Schule Schloss Salem in Germany, with Prince Max of Baden, and Gordonstoun in Scotland.
