The symbol's name, arroba, was originally an Arabic word used in measurements. In modern usage, the @ is sometimes used to indicate explicitly that a gendered word includes both males and females.
Currently, the word arroba means both the at-symbol and a unit of weight. In Venetian, the symbol was interpreted to mean amphora ( anfora ), a unit of weight and volume based upon the capacity of the standard amphora jar since the 6th century.
It stood for a unit of volume, arroba (“quadrantal”; from Arabic al-rubʿ, “one-fourth”), which represented the capacity of a standard amphora, a vessel used to store and transport liquids, cereals, and other goods.
