They only could rent a good place after making money with Jesse and Walt later in Season 2/Season 3 and then getting paid again in season 5. Jesse was homeless then too and a victim of slavery. Pete was on probation and with Jesse being Walter's top assistant that's a lot of heat. They weren’t available for the scene.
