Richard Gilder Jr. (May 31, 1932 – May 12, 2020), was an American stockbroker and philanthropist. He was a co-founder of the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History. He also headed the brokerage firm Gilder, Gagnon, Howe & Co., whose specialty is trading leveraged stocks and shortselling.
Life and career. Gilder was born on February 8, 1844 [1] at Bordentown, New Jersey. He was the son of Jane (Nutt) Gilder and the Rev. William Henry Gilder, and educated at his father's seminary in Flushing, Queens.
Rockefeller was born on January 20, 1949, and was a son of Margaret ( née McGrath) Rockefeller and banker David Rockefeller. He was also a grandson of American financier John D. Rockefeller Jr., and a great-grandson of American business magnate and philanthropist John D. Rockefeller Sr.

On behalf of the entire Manhattan Institute community, I am saddened to note the passing of Richard “Dick” Gilder, a former chairman of our board and a great son of New York. Dick enjoyed professional success as an entrepreneur on Wall Street, founding his own brokerage firm, Gilder Gagnon Howe & Co. LLC.
Born in Manhattan, Gilder was a fifth-generation New Yorker, son of a real estate property manager and a homemaker. He earned a BA in history from Yale and briefly attended Yale Law School. In 1968, he started the investment firm Gilder, Gagnon, Howe & Company, which would become a multi-billion-dollar company.
