My friends told me I'm fucked for purposely buying and eating Granny Smith apples. Everyone says they're great for pies or whatever, I don't know. I prefer an apple over an apple pie.
I was just reading up on the best apples for pie and was surprised that the Joy of Cooking flagged Granny Smiths as being actively BAD for pies - apparently they turn mushy when cooked! I think you can certainly make a pie with Fujis; if it doesn't turn out nice well - you've got 60lbs of them!
Apr 18, 2024 · Granny smith apples work well in apple pie and apple crumble. It's not actually that sour if you add enough sugar- I just thought it sounded good for the title of this skin. I tried a bit of a different shading style (in terms of colors).
I used Granny Smith this time and they aren’t as tart as I was expecting, they’re pretty well perfect. The first time was honeycrisps and I think they were a big part of my problem. Didn’t cook through and were just too apple-y, if that even makes sense for apple pie.
