  1. The school welcomes applications for the fall semester of each year (no students are admitted for the spring semester). Please note, only complete applications are evaluated by each program's Faculty Admissions Committee. Except in rare circumstances, students are accepted for full-time study only. Expand all.

  2. Most MFA programs require 48 credits or as few as 36 credits, but the Columbia Writing Program considers the study of literature from the practitioner's point of view—reading as a writer—essential to a writer's education.

  3. The Visual Arts Program is interdisciplinary and offers an MFA degree in Visual Arts rather than in one specific medium. The two-year studio program, taught by internationally celebrated artists, allows students to pursue moving image, new genres, painting, photography, printmaking, and sculpture.

  4. All MFA degree programs at the School of the Arts require completion of at least two consecutive years of full-time study. Certain programs and/or concentrations may allow further semesters of study. See “Research Arts” below for more information.

  5. Visual Arts applicants must specify a field of study on their application, but if they are accepted into the program they will not be held to that field. ALL applicants must submit the following: Statement of Intent : No more than 500 words.
