    It has so much variety. There are straight, flat stretches for speed and distance, hills to add difficulty, and lots of scenery.

    It has some nice challenging roll to it, it is pretty neat to run without having to dodge traffic in the heart of Downtown, and it was the finish line of the 1992 Men's Marathon Olympic Trials (the back of the Supreme Court building on Civic Center Drive marks the spot).You can do a nice 3-mile loop by going west across Broad Street bridge, then fo...

    Sidewalks are wide, the Olentangy Trail runs through campus, the Columbus Marathon route passes through as well. I especially like circling Ohio Stadium as part of my runs there. All that said, do not go when classes are changing.

    There are hilly, heavily shaded trails, and even a paved path on the upper part of the park that is great for hill workouts. Just be careful running at busy times when there are lots of hikers and walkers.

    This 3.85-mile loop really has it all, with flat and downhill sections and long uphills. Plus, you can leave fluids at your car and stay hydrated each lap.

    Specifically the 5-mile mountain bike loop on Africa Road just north of Cheshire Road. This is a great single-track dirt trail that is pretty tough for "flat" central Ohio! Just be wary of bikes (I've only encountered them a couple of times, but I don't wear headphones here to stay alert).

    Much like the Olentangy Trail, this offers some nice flat sections with some roll, plus there is water at the Scioto Audubon park nature center building.

    Whether you are training to run or walk 13.1 or 26.2 (miles), you can't go wrong by building in speedwork, and there is no better place than a track for accuracy and comparison from workout to workout, plus ease of access to your hydration. mwagner@dispatch.com @MikeWagner48
