Born and raised in London, Mary was the daughter of Francis, Duke of Teck, a German nobleman, and Princess Mary Adelaide of Cambridge, a granddaughter of King George III. She was informally known as "May", after the month of her birth.
When Edward, her eldest son became the king after George V’s demise, she fulfilled the role of Queen mother. When Edward VIII renounced the throne, his younger brother Albert wore the crown as King George VI. Mary of Teck passed away at 85, shortly before Queen Elizabeth II’s crowning.
