The remake just feels like if they made the movie today + a little extra to reflect the budget. Making it so the enemy has a sort of territory in the abandoned town instead of just the general desert took the thrills up a notch.
Budget for the remake was about 60x larger than the first movie ($230K vs $15M). Bigger budget does not automatically equal a better movie, but it does give more resources to do things that the original might not have had budget for.
