Thomas William Holmes VC (14 October 1898 – 4 January 1950) was a soldier in the Canadian Expeditionary Force, and was a Canadian recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces, during the First World War.

Nov 2, 2022 · Owen Sound’s Thomas William Holmes earned this Victoria Cross as a private with the 4th Canadian Mounted Rifles in the assault on Passchendaele, Belgium on Oct. 26, 1917. The medal is now part of the Canadian War Museum’s collection.

He enlisted in the 147th Infantry Battalion C.E.F. in 1915, but later transferred to the 4th Canadian Mounted Rifles. In October, 1917, his unit took part in the violent opening assault on the German position at Passchendaele.
