The University of Otago (Māori: Ōtākou Whakaihu Waka) is a public research collegiate university based in Dunedin, Otago, New Zealand. Founded in 1869, Otago is New Zealand's oldest university and one of the oldest universities in Oceania.
The University of Otago has 3,000 international students from 100 countries, and more than half our academic staff moved here from overseas. More recently, Dunedin has become one of six refugee resettlement locations in New Zealand – further increasing our cultural diversity.
Otago is proud to be the top ranked University in the country for international student learning, with 25 subject areas in the top 200 globally, as per the QS World University Rankings by subject. It first received a Five Stars Plus QS Stars University rating in 2016 (and again in 2018 and 2021).
Located in Dunedin, the University of Otago was first established in 1869, making it the oldest university in New Zealand. As well as its main campus, there is a nearby campus in Invercargill and two further campuses in Christchurch and Wellington, which both focus on health sciences.

The University of Otago stretches from Auckland in the north of the country to Invercargill in the south. While most study takes place at its stunning Dunedin campus, the Health Science-focused campuses in Christchurch and Wellington are home to many of its postgraduate students.
