The Department of African & African-American Studies (AFAS) at Washington University is an interdisciplinary area of study, largely concentrated in the humanities and social sciences.
Gerald Early is the Merle Kling Professor of Modern Letters in the African and African American Studies Department at Washington University in St. Louis, where he has taught since 1982. He was most recently the interim director of the Center for the Study of Race, Ethnicity, and Equity (2022-2023).
The Department of African and African-American Studies offers opportunities for students to explore the social, political, and intellectual history as well as the literature, culture, and artistic life of various peoples in the world who are African or of African descent.
