Super Saiyan Rage ( 超 スーパー サイヤ 人 じん 怒りSūpā Saiya-jin Ikari) [5] is an extremely powerful form in the Super Saiyan line of transformations, either an advancement of Super Saiyan ( 超 スーパー サイヤ 人 じん Sūpā Saiya-jin) [1] [4] [6] or Super Saiyan 2 ( 超 スーパー サイヤ 人 じん 2 ツー Sūpā Saiya-jin Tsū) [7] [8] depending on the source.

It is a super saiyan transformation, but appears to have traces of god ki leading to part of it to turn blue. Thus, it appears as though the exposure of god ki has allowed Trunks to emulate (most likely subconsciously) god ki to develop a blue aura.
Manga Trunks literally has a Super Saiyan 2 as strong as Super Saiyan 3, that's his equivalent to Rage. Also, Rage appeared on the cover of the manga volume.
SSJ3 was only ever achieved by a dead Goku and Gotenks who both just mutated the SSJ2 form further for more power. It's similar to SSJ Grade 3 but instead of speed it sacrifices ki. Trunks instead perfect SSJ2, and presumably SSJ Rage could be the true continuation of ssj forms.
