The new trailer for Avengers: Infinity War features a key piece of information courtesy of Gamora. She reveals Thanos’ main goal is “to wipe out half the universe,” also adding the how of it all: “If he gets all the Infinity Stones, he can do it with a snap of his fingers.”

This master plan is pulled directly from The Infinity Gauntlet comic written by Jim Starlin and pencilled by George Pérez and Ron Lim where Thanos uses the power of the completed Infinity Gauntlet to instantly kill half of the living beings in existence. He does this as a tribute to Mistress Death in hopes of gaining her favor. Yup, Thanos is essentially in love with the Grim Reaper and is eager to murder his way to her heart. And he does just that with a literal snap of his fingers. Gamora wasn’t kidding! (Marvel Comics)It’s unclear if we’ll see Thanos macking on Death in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Some have theorized that Thor: Ragnarok’s Hela would be a fine stand-in for the character given that she styles herself as the Goddess of Death. While the fiery Surtur may have defeated Hela as he destroyed Asgard, we wouldn’t be surprised if she somehow survived and makes a surprise comeback in Infinity War. Supporting this theory is that Thanos and Hela recently locked lips in the comics, perhaps alluding to what's to come. (Marvel Comics)That said, the fact that we’ve already seen Hela defeated in a Thor movie doesn’t make her seem like that much of a threat for an Avengers flick, so adding her into the mix with Thanos might not have the desired effect on audiences. Although, that didn't stop Loki...

That leads us to a new piece of information recently revealed by EW. Infinity War will show Thanos’ tragic backstory that saw him witness the destruction of his homeworld of Titan and vow to “save” the universe by killing off half of existence. Of course, avenging the deaths of your people by killing even more people doesn’t make sense, so we're missing the key component of why he thinks this way.

Based on Thanos actor Josh Brolin using the term "overpopulation" while talking about Thanos' motivations to EW, we could imagine that Thanos sees the universe as a chaotic place because it’s overrun with too many beings, so he looks to bring order to it by cutting life down to a manageable size he can rule over. That would be a way for the filmmakers to get around having to include Death herself because showing Thanos court a hooded skeleton might be a little too weird.

Although, given how much fans love a certain trigger-happy raccoon and his walking tree friend, who are we to say what’s too weird? Perhaps the physical embodiment of death has a role to play in the MCU after all. We'll find out on April 27.
