- Chariots of Fire is a good film but not a great one. It crossed the finish line in an upset for Best Picture, edging out a blockbuster favorite and two critics’ darlings that likely split votes. Still, this is an impressive production, featuring Oscar-winning costumes, great period flavor, gorgeous cinematography, and solid performances.

CHARIOTS OF FIRE is undoubtedly one of the finest sports movies ever made because it isn't just about sports per se. Instead, it's a period picture summoning up life in the 1920s, with deep characterisation, strong and subtle acting from the principle actors, and a great attention to detail.
